WAVE PTX FAQs.
Common questions about WAVE PTX in Australia. If your question is not here, our specialists will happily answer it directly.
What is WAVE PTX?
WAVE PTX is a push-to-talk over cellular (PTToC or PoC) service from Motorola Solutions. It provides instant two-way radio style group and private voice, plus messaging, mapping and dispatch, carried over 4G, 5G and Wi-Fi networks rather than traditional radio frequencies. That means coverage anywhere in Australia with mobile signal, without building your own radio infrastructure.
How is it different from a normal two-way radio?
A traditional two-way radio talks directly to other radios or through a repeater, which limits range to your radio system's footprint. WAVE PTX devices behave the same way at the push of a button, but the call travels over mobile networks, so two users can be in different cities or states and still share one talk group. Traditional radios remain the better fit for some sites, which is why many operations run both, bridged together.
Do I need an ACMA licence for WAVE PTX?
No. Because WAVE PTX uses public mobile networks rather than dedicated radio frequencies, there is no apparatus licence to apply for. That removes licensing lead time and cost, and makes it fast to stand up communications for a new site, contract or event.
What coverage does WAVE PTX have?
Coverage follows the mobile networks and Wi-Fi. Anywhere a device can reach 4G, 5G or a configured Wi-Fi network, it is on the talk group. For most Australian metro, regional and highway environments that means effectively nationwide reach. For remote sites beyond mobile coverage, we can design hybrid solutions combining WAVE PTX with traditional radio.
Which devices work with WAVE PTX?
Purpose-built Motorola TLK devices (including the TLK 25 wearable, TLK 110 rugged handheld and TLK 150 in-vehicle mobile), the WAVE PTX app on iOS and Android smartphones, and the browser-based WAVE PTX Dispatch console. Existing MOTOTRBO digital two-way radios can also be linked into WAVE PTX talk groups for radio-to-cellular interoperability.
Can it work alongside our existing two-way radios?
Yes. WAVE PTX can bridge MOTOTRBO radio systems into its talk groups, so on-site crews on radios and mobile or interstate staff on TLK devices or the app all share the same conversation. This is a common deployment pattern for operations with a fixed site plus a travelling workforce.
How much does WAVE PTX cost?
WAVE PTX is priced as a per-user subscription plus hardware, with options like dispatch seats and radio interoperability added where needed. Because the total depends on team size, device mix and contract length, we quote per operation. Contact us with your user count and we will put numbers against it, usually the same day.
What is waveoncloud.com and how does it relate to this site?
waveoncloud.com is the WAVE PTX platform portal where subscribed customers program and manage their devices, users and talk groups. This site, waveoncloud.com.au, is an Australian information hub operated by WAVE on Cloud to help you understand and buy WAVE PTX. If you are an existing customer looking to manage your fleet, head to waveoncloud.com.
Do the devices arrive ready to use?
Yes. Every WAVE PTX device we supply is configured before dispatch with your talk groups, contacts and features, and your subscriptions are activated as part of onboarding. Devices work out of the box, and we brief your coordinators on the dispatch console as part of handover.
Who supports the system after we buy?
Our Sydney team does. That covers account and subscription changes, adding and removing users, device faults and repairs, and design changes as your operation grows. Platinum Channel Partner accreditation gives us direct escalation into Motorola when platform-level support is needed.
